While studying at Tyler School of Art, Sophia Heij Mariano became fascinated with the notion of printing on non traditionalal media. She created an alternative process to printing large scale photographs onto sheet glass which was noted in a recent publication edited by Jill Enfield and published in 2013.
Combining contemporary and historical photographic techniques, Sophia examines figural and subjective presence through the juxtaposition of individual silhouettes, elucidating both the universality and idiosyncrasy of the human form. The subjects presented in her photographs become examples of our embodied human condition, a condition in which both similarities and differences transcend gender and physical form.
